Unicorn Heritage

In 1937 came the first in a long line of Unicorn darting innovations from Unicorn founder Frank Lowy- the "Silver Comet" - a precision made set of three darts. Prior to this time darts were sold from dump bins in hardware shops and they were all thrown in together, regardless of weight or style.

Since then Unicorn have pioneered darts technology worldwide. Frank Lowy paid £6 to have made this original prototype set of his patent Silver Comet darts and it was with this single investement that the Unicorn Group was founded.

In New Zealand the sport continues to grow in popularity so the announcement in January 2016 that the Darts World Series will be returning to Auckland in 2016 was very well recieved. The competition, which features the top eight professional players, will take place at Trusts Arena from June 17 to 19.

Unicorn Products Ltd are the Official Equipment Provider to the PDC, with their Eclipse HD dartboards used in all tournaments, and they also sponsor the PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour and PDC Unicorn World Youth Championship.

Product Innovation

In 1949 Unicorn became the first company to sell darts classified by actual weight, an obvious benefit for all players. To this day, Unicorn is the only company confident enough to guarantee weight accuracy to within 0.33% on most tungsten darts.

Another Unicorn innovation of major significance was the introduction in 1972 of the first commercial tungsten alloy darts which allowed the player the great advantage of slimmer darts for closer grouping. This was followed in 1987 with the introduction of the first titanium tungsten darts and our unique range of Golden Unicorn darts.

Flights, shafts and accessories have not escaped the Unicorn pioneering zeal. From feather flights, we developed and introduced the first one-piece plastic flight, the modern polyester flight and in 1955 launched the first flight with impressions on the wing.

Slikstik, Unicorn's patented side loading dart shaft, is a world beater and in 1977 we introduced the world's first steel shaft with replaceable top.

21st century dart technology arrived in 1995 with the launch of QuikSteel. With QuikSteel Spin and Tri-Point, Unicorn launched the world's first rotating, interchangeable integral steel shaft and the world's first rotating, retracting and instantly interchangeable dart point.
